Andrew Smith FCA MSI - Managing Director
Formerly the senior KPMG financial regulatory services partner in the North of England, Andy has unparalleled experience in advising a wide range of organisations on financial accounting, regulatory, transaction related and commercial issues in the financial sector. He also has extensive experience in advising regulators globally on operational issues arising from financial regulation. Andy joined Cardale in June 2007 as the Finance Director and subsequently suceeded Stephen Jackson as Managing Director in April 2008.

Ashley Alger FSI - Executive Director
Joined Cawood Smithie & Co. Stockbrokers, in 1979. He qualified and became a member of the London Stock Exchange in 1985. In 1991 he became the partner responsible for finance, settlement and administration. In 2000, after the acquisition of Cawood Smithie by Brown Shipley, he was appointed Chief Operating Officer of Brown Shipley Investment Managers. Ashley was a founding Director of Cardale and is responsible for the finance and operations functions.

Richard Whiteley FSI - Executive Director
Joined Cawood Smithie & Co in 1982 and became a partner of Cawood Smithie & Co in 1991. In 2000, following the acquisition of Cawood Smithie & Co, he was appointed the Regional Director of Brown Shipley for the North East. Richard was a founding director of Cardale and is head of the investment management function.

Stephen Jackson FSI - Executive Director
Read Economics at Cambridge and joined J & A Scrimgeour in 1968. Joined Le Mare, Martin in 1970 as an investment analyst and subsequently, Cawood Smithie at its inception in 1975. Was Senior Partner from 1993 to 2000, when the company was acquired by Brown Shipley and a main Board Director of Brown Shipley until December 2002. Previously Managing Director of Cardale, Stephen became Chairman in April 2008.

Charles Kerr - Non-Executive Director
Qualified as an accountant in 1976 after a career in the RAF and joined Cawood Smithie & Co in 1979. Became Finance Partner in Cawood Smithie & Co in 1985, and was subsequently made Deputy Senior Partner. Charles became an Executive Director of Cardale at its inception and moved to a non-executive directorship in April 2008.
Neil Brayshaw MSI
Began his stockbroking career in 1981 with Cawood Smithie & Co. After leaving Cawood Smithie in 1988, Neil joined Grieg Middleton’s (now Gerrard’s) private client department in York, where he concentrated on advisory and discretionary fund management, before returning to Cawood Smithie in 1997. Worked as a discretionary fund manager with Cawood Smithie and latterly, Brown Shipley, until 2004 when he joined Cardale as a Senior Investment Manager. Neil manages discretionary portfolios for private individuals, trusts and charities.

Sue Halliday BA ACA MSI
Qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Price Waterhouse in 1983 and subsequently trained in all areas of taxation with Ernst & Young. For the last twenty years, Sue has specialised in private client matters and in particular the taxation of individuals and trusts. Sue joined Cawood Smithie in 1999 as Head of Tax, became Deputy Director within Brown Shipley’s Tax and Legal Department and subsequently transferred to Cardale, together with her tax team. More recently, Sue qualified as an Investment Manager and now spends the majority of her time on investment matters for individuals, trusts, pension funds and charities.

Jimmy Crewe FSI
Has over ten years’ experience in the investment management field. His expertise covers advisory and discretionary client portfolios, trusts, charities and pensions. Jimmy also has specialist knowledge of unit trusts, venture capital trusts and structured investments. His extensive involvement in setting investment strategy and developing ideas for clients complements the Cardale approach. Formerly with Redmayne Bentley, he joined Cardale in April, 2006.

Tony Oxley MSI
Began his career in the investment industry in 1998 with T D Waterhouse. He moved to Redmayne Bentley in 1999, where he gained his Securities Institute qualifications. In addition to his focus on advisory and discretionary client portfolios, trusts, charities and pensions, Tony has specialist expertise in collective investments, particularly investment trusts. He is also well known as a local radio and TV commentator on the stockmarket.

Jeremy Elder MSI
After graduating from Durham University in 1999, spent a year in Australia working for Macquarie Bank and ABN Amro; before returning to the UK to pursue a career in private client investment management. In 2001, he joined Brown Shipley and then Cardale in 2003.

James Mossman IMC - Business Development Manager
Graduated from Liverpool University and began his career in financial services working with IFAs as an investment consultant in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Moved to Yorkshire in 1996 with Morgan Stanley Quilter where, as Regional Manager, he was responsible for business development within the professional intermediary market. He joined Cardale in 2003.

Martin Fountain
Joined Cawood Smithie & Co in 1998 working within the Settlement function and moved on to work as part of the dealing team. Following the acquisition by Brown Shipley in 2000, Martin took the opportunity of moving to London with the company and worked as a Dealer there. After spending 3 years working in the City he moved back to Harrogate to take the position of Dealer with Cardale in September 2003.

Ian Wood - Research Analyst
Ian graduated from Durham University in 1995 and has been working in the Investment Management sector ever since. Previously working at Yorkshare and Redmayne Bentley, he latterly joined Rensburg Sheppards where he acted as Fund Manager and group analyst for the area. Ian joined Cardale in December 2006 and is responsible for providing all research information to the investment management teams.

Nigel Paterson FSI
Has worked within the investment management industry since the 1980’s. Formerly with Allied Provincial Securities and Greig Middleton, he joined Cawood Smithie in 1996. Following the acquisition of Cawood Smithie by Brown Shipley, he became an Associate Investment Director in Brown Shipley. Nigel joined Cardale in 2003 to head up our Hull office.

Giles Fairburn FSI
Has worked in stockbroking since the mid 1980’s. Formerly with Fowler Sutton and Capel-Cure Myers, he joined Cawood Smithie & Co in 1997, and following the acquisition of Cawood Smithie & Co by Brown Shipley, became an Associate Investment Director. Giles joined Cardale's Hull office in 2003.

Robert Henshilwood MSI
After reading economics at university, Robert has worked in stockbroking since 1978, firstly as a researcher with Tilney & Co based in Liverpool. He then moved into private client broking and in 1999 started up PH Pope & Son in Hull which was subsequently taken over by Brewin Dolphin in 2007. He joined the Cardale's Hull office in February 2007.

David Porter MSI
David began his stockbroking career in 1982 with Fowler Sutton in Hull as the Office Manager. In 1985 he moved into the private client department in order to look after clients and became the Head of Dealing. Following various mergers and acquisitions he concentrated on Advisory and Discretionary Managed clients for Capel-Cure Myers, Pope Stockbrokers and from 2002 until November 2006, Brewin Dolphin. David joined Cardale's Hull office in February 2007.

Alex Flower ASI
Graduated from Hull University in 2003 with a joint honours degree in Computer Science and Management studies. Worked for the Magistrates Courts Service in the Fine Enforcement division, before joining Brewin Dolphin Securities in October 2004 as a Trainee Investment Manager. Alex joined Cardale's Hull office in December 2006 and focuses on private client portfolio management.

Ian Marshall
Ian graduated in Law from Hull University and was part of the inaugural team at Popes Stockbrokers in Hull in 1999. He remained with the company following the acquisition by Brewin Dolphin in 2002. He joined Cardale in December 2006 and focuses his attention on investment management and intermediary work.

Colin Bradley - Tax Manager
Began his career in 1967 with the Inland Revenue as a Tax Officer, Higher Grade. In 1976 he then joined Grant Thornton, Chartered Accountants in their personal tax and trust department. In 1987 Colin moved to Binder Hamlyn, Chartered Accountants and subsequently transferred with a portfolio of clients to Wilson, Braithwaite Scholey, Chartered Accountants. Colin joined the personal tax and trust department of Cardale in December 2004 and was promoted to Tax Manager at the end of July 2008.

Nicola Winterburn - Tax Consultant
After working for a number of years in Accountancy in several commercial sectors, Nicola joined the Finance Department at Brown Shipley in 2001. She subsequently joined Cardale in 2004 to take up her role in the Tax Department, dealing with the taxation of individuals and trusts.

Rupert Stringer - Tax Consultant
Rupert joined the Cardale tax team in August 2008. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in handling tax enquiries, gained during a career of 17 years working for the Inland Revenue.
